About hakit

Hakea Sericea, or Silky Hakea, is a large shrub native to Eastern Australia, and has become a major invasive species in our country, South Africa, as well as other places around the world. The Hakea weed posesses a threat to the biodiversity of the Cape floral kingdom here in South Africa, therefore a plan to eliminate this species from our land is in the works.

Here at Hakit we strive to help prevent the number of Hakea shrubs from growing by harvesting the pod from the plant with the seed still inside. This prevents any seeds from escaping the pod and falling to the ground or being carried by the wind to any nearby fields.

Instead of burning the pods and releasing toxins into the atmosphere, we upcycle the pods by turning them into beautiful, unique pieces of jewellery and other products. We want to create a product that is enjoyable for everyone and we hope to continue with Hakit for as long as Hakea Sericea remains an issue in our country.
